QNX's selection as the foundation for Eclipse S-CORE strengthens BlackBerry's position in the competitive automotive software market.
BlackBerry's QNX division has secured a significant strategic win by becoming the foundational operating system for the Eclipse Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE) Project. This collaboration brings together automotive heavyweights including BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, ETAS, Qorix, and Accenture to develop an open-source core stack for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs).
The selection of QNX Software Development Platform 8.0 represents a strong industry endorsement of BlackBerry's automotive software capabilities. The S-CORE project focuses on embedded high-performance Electronic Control Units (ECUs) - the computational backbone of modern vehicles - which positions QNX at the heart of next-generation automotive architecture development.
This partnership leverages BlackBerry's recent QNX Everywhere initiative, which offers free access to QNX SDP 8.0 for non-commercial use. This strategic move expands QNX's ecosystem by providing automakers with a risk-free evaluation environment before commercial deployment, potentially accelerating adoption cycles.
The automotive software stack market is increasingly competitive, with players like Android Automotive, Linux-based platforms, and proprietary systems vying for dominance. By securing this position within an industry-wide initiative backed by major OEMs, BlackBerry reinforces QNX's relevance in the rapidly evolving software-defined vehicle landscape where safety-critical systems are paramount.
QNX's established relationship with major automakers (BMW, Bosch, Ford, Geely, GM, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo) provides a solid foundation for this initiative, potentially creating additional commercial opportunities as these prototype developments move toward production.
