Insights
Stryker's new InThrill device strengthens position in thrombectomy market with improved small vessel capabilities.
The second-generation InThrill Thrombectomy System marks a significant advancement in Stryker's vascular intervention portfolio following its Inari Medical acquisition. This 8 French over-the-wire system addresses a specific clinical need in the thrombectomy market - small vessel and arteriovenous access clot removal - with several technical improvements over the previous generation.
The system's design enhancements are clinically meaningful: increased radial force improves wall apposition for better clot engagement; the offset single open mouth optimizes clot capture; internal struts ensure even clot distribution; and ergonomic backend improvements streamline the user experience. These features collectively address physician pain points in challenging thrombectomy cases.
Initial physician feedback from UPMC suggests strong clinical performance, with Dr. Pinter noting more effective and consistent thrombectomies. Dr. Ghodadra's comment about a "changed paradigm of treatment" suggests potential for market share gains in the AV access segment.
This product launch demonstrates Stryker's continued integration of Inari's technology platform and extends the company's reach in the thrombectomy market. By targeting specific vascular intervention niches with purpose-built tools rather than repurposing existing technology, Stryker is employing a differentiation strategy that could strengthen its competitive position against rivals like Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and Penumbra in the thrombectomy space.
The second generation InThrill Thrombectomy System is an 8 French over-the-wire system comprising the InThrill thrombectomy catheter and the InThrill sheath. InThrill is built upon a familiar platform, optimized to become the standard for AV access and small vessel thrombectomy. Offering unmatched efficiency and clot removal, InThrill has distinctive features which include:
- Increased radial force for improved luminal wall apposition for optimized clot removal
- Offset single open mouth to optimize clot capture and removal
- Internal struts for even clot distribution within the element
- Redesigned backend to streamline ergonomics and improve the user experience.
On May 19, 2025, Dr. Joshua Pinter and Dr. Anish Ghodadra of the UPMC health care system performed the first commercial case using the new InThrill Thrombectomy System. "The next generation of InThrill has made our thrombectomies more effective and consistent than ever," said Dr. Pinter. "Inari's dedication to building a small vessel tool has changed our paradigm of treatment for AV access thrombectomy," added Dr. Ghodadra.
"The launch of the next-generation InThrill Thrombectomy System reflects our deep commitment to solving real-world challenges in vascular care," said Tim Lanier, president, Inari Division. "This latest innovation delivers new tools and enriches our work with physicians in the vascular space."
